More data points:

This box has an *identical* slapd.conf to another (busy) server, which 
does not have the problem.

It has been known to break with the very first search after a restart
(and we're talking a minute or so), which sort of contradicts the TTL 
theory, even though the symptoms are similar.  In fact, in each case it 
*was* the first search after a restart (but the converse is not true).

An undetected corruption?  Dodgy memory?
