Are there any guides or FAQs on upgrading from 2.2.x to 2.3.x? THere
seem to be significant advantages to running 2.3 over 2.2, but I'm
unsure of whether or not I can do an in-place upgrade or need to have
a more robust staging plan.

We currently have 1 master and 3 children syncing through slurpd.

I don't think there is one, but basically you'll need to slapcat your existing database (2.2) and then slapadd it back in (2.3) since the database format changed some. You will also want to verify that your ACL's work correctly. I suggest setting up a test system and doing some basic checks. Some things also changed names (proxycache->pcache), etc.
