What character set does the JDBC driver output its data in?

Whenever a word contains the norwegian characters à à or à the text
gets all scrambled up.

FI:
expected result:
	BjÃrn

result from jdbc:
	QmrDuHJu

Is it possible to set the output characterset in the connectionsstring or do I need to convert the text after it is retrived from the database?

It is automatically Mime Base64 encoded, which would mean it isn't scrambled. ;) This is in accordance to the RFC's.
