Reducing the required file descriptors for OpenLDAP proxy

I've reviewed the docs and the code but I haven't noticed 
a way of scaling down the number file descriptors slapd 
requires when acting as a proxy.

Is there a configuration item that effectively reduces the
maximum number of file descriptors slapd is likely to open?
What performance impact would I encounter by reducing the
number of threads to 4?  Would it really only handle 1/4 
the usual load?
