Okay, but it seems to me like these settings are getting pulled in from
the similar-sounding entries in slapd.conf. Might that be the case? I
appreciate the link and will follow its references to the sizing
guidelines, as well.

At the risk of sounding really foolish, I'm pretty sure there is none.
Would it help if I created one with some custom settings and put it in
the database directory? For reference, my database entries in slapd.conf
checkpoint 1024 5
index objectClass eq
If you are using the BDB backend, you need a DB_CONFIG file.
