Okay, but it seems to me like these settings are getting pulled in from the similar-sounding entries in slapd.conf. Might that be the case? I appreciate the link and will follow its references to the sizing guidelines, as well.

directory       /var/lib/ldap
index   objectClass     eq

If you are using the BDB backend, you need a DB_CONFIG file.
