The above document is out of date; the actual code is the best reference.

Because "Howard's backend" sounds too much like a movie title.

back-hdb shares most of the back-bdb code and has identical 
configuration syntax. The only notable difference for slapd.conf is that 
back-hdb requires a fairly large IDL cache in order to get good search 
performance, while back-bdb can perform well on searches even without 
the IDL cache.
