Same thing on Solaris, and our file handles are unlimited for slapd. I did a bit of evaluation on this, with some input from Howard @ Symas as well, and there were just a lot of mutex locks that were created when we bumped up the thread count too high that cause severe performance degredation. Of course, I haven't looked at this in depth for about a year. ;)
