I notice that the current RedHat Fedora sports openldap-2.1.22-8. Do you think that version would be suitable, given that Stable is at openldap-2.1.25-20031217?

It is unforunate that Redhat continues to distribute that version of OpenLDAP. You'll have better luck (and a lot more support) if you investigate upgrading to a modern version of OpenLDAP.
