I  know maintainers and developers by now... no thanks!

Funny, I installed OL 2.1.23 ysterday, but from a debian package, just by 
adding

deb http://www.backports.org/debian woody openldap2

too my /etc/apt/sources.list.

It installed al kinds of libs (even sasl and krb and heimdal whatever) but in 
the end, I had a working and running version of OL, and FINALLY i can begin 
testing and debugging the graphics and layout. 

So far for 'compiling your own'. 

Bah.
