jump to another branch if not found

Is there a way to make the openldap server return a referral only if
it can't find the entry which was being searched for?

So far, I can make it return a referral if it doesn't have a
database matching the search base, or return the referral all the
time, even if an entry was found. I needed it to only return a
referral if my search is unsuccesfull, is this possible?
