Access Control using NIS

I have been over the OpenLDAP Administrator's Guide, Linux LDAP HOWTO, and Cyrus SASL for System Administrators, but am still trying to wrap my head around authentication. I'm only just setting up an LDAP server, so I don't want to store authentication information using LDAP, yet. Users currently login using NIS, so I would like to setup access control on the LDAP directory using NIS. I can't figure out if this can be done using the "simple" authentication method, or whether I must use SASL. If I must use SASL, I can't figure out where to configure the appropriate SASL method, or in what format I supply usernames and passwords to ldapsearch etc. Clarification would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Jack
