RE: mapping one search to another

ok - last one before the weekend...

I have:
automount:	files
in my nsswitch.conf

my /etc/auto.master looks like this:
/users ldap:my.server.com:ou=autousers,dc=nerc-wallingford,dc=ac,dc=uk

If I restart autofs like this:
/etc/init.d/autofs restart
and sniff the network traffic, I see my client trying to bind to my
server with a dn of:
ou=autousers,dc=nerc-wallingford,dc=ac,dc=uk
!!
why is it trying to bind with the dn of the map?
bizarrely, the error I get from the server is:
"requested protocol version not allowed"
I've allowed v2 binds and also bind_anon_dn (obviously it doesnt supply
a password), but the whole things seems wrong.

heyho.. comments gratefully received
