Trying to get started with OpenLDAP 2.1.16

Hello,

I'm having trouble just getting OpenLDAP 2.1.16 out of the garage.

Have downloaded and unpacked it, but cannot get ./configure to work for me.
The error msg I keep getting is:

	configure: error: can only configure for one host and one target at a time

and appears almost immediately after the 2 Copyright statements,
irregardless of whether I try

	./configure

or

	./configure --enable-bdb no --enable-perl yes

or

	./configure --enable-bdb no --enable-perl yes --host=sparc-sun-SunOS5.6

The remaining OS and system info is "Generic_105181-23 sun4m sparc
SUNW,SPARCstation-20".

I suspect that the error msg may only be a secondary symptom and not
directly indicative of what the root problem is, but I have no idea what
might be.

Any experience with this error msg?  Any ideas?
