I did not play with sasl, but I created RPM packages of 2.1.16 for
redhat 8.0 which works fine for me, they are at:
there's a source RPMS as well if you need to rebuild !.

I'm a bit lost, and frustrated. Its been 2 days of me building from
source and running into brick walls.
