Changing passwords

Please I would appreciate help here. I have set up ldap successfully on
Solaris 8 systems, I can authenticate all the users in the slapd database,
but I cannot change passwords from the client end.

Whenever the command passwd is typed I get a "permission denied" error.

I changed some settings and this happened formerly on typing password, I
would get a prompt to enter LDAP password.

I am using openldap version 2.0.8. with simple bind.
