why i can not start slapd?

hi
   I'm trying to completely install openldap-2.1.6.with BerkeleyDB.4.1.24 on the linux7.3 (upgraded from linux7.1)
   I hava successfully passed the "make test" stage .then i make
a little change about "salpd.conf" (/usr/local/etc/openldap/slapd.conf ),making BDB database definition just as the "Guideline"have said .
   Next ,i want run  my slapd with the common comand:
  # ./usr/local/libexec/slapd
   But there is no reaction !  & no any error or help information.

   for my limited knowledge  with the openldap and linux ,mybe my question is too easy for you ,but do thank you for your help !
