extra slapd processes?

I have a question about slapd processes. When my machine boots up there are 6 slapd processes, like so:

> ps -AH|grep slapd
 2141 ? 00:00:00 slapd
 2152 ? 00:00:00 slapd
 2158 ? 00:00:00 slapd
 2269 ? 00:00:00 slapd
 2270 ? 00:00:00 slapd
 2271 ? 00:00:00 slapd

When I shutdown, reboot, or run "start-stop-daemon --stop" I get:

start-stop-daemon: warning: failed to kill 2270: No such process
start-stop-daemon: warning: failed to kill 2269: No such process

If I manually run "start-stop-daemon --start" I get only 3 processes and no subsequent errors. Any idea why these seemingly superfluous processes exist and how I can get rid of this error?

Thanks

Charlie
