Force simple authentication in ldap.conf?

Hey there, it's me again ....

Now I  found how to force the library to speak protocol version 2, but
there is no switch equivalent to the command line -x (simple
authentication). At least not in my documentation & howtos ....

Does anyone know how to force the use of simple authentication? 

I don't want to recompile the client since we're moving from the old
server to a newer one which supports all these things and I don't want
to install the libraries twice :-)
