`-x' flag a necessity?

I was wondering if the -x flag on ldapsearch command was a necessity, or was
it because of my compile time/configuration issue?

If I try to execute a simple ldap search (when either binding as a user, or
anonymous) without the '-x' flag, it returns an error: no such object. If,
however, i issue the -x flag, everything works perfectly. (No encryption or
anything is being used on the server.)

I was wondering if this was standard behavior or whether there was something
misconfigured with the server.

Inherent in every intention and desire is the mechanics for
its fulfillment... intention and desire in the field of pure
potentiality have infinite organizing power. And when we
introduce an intention in the fertile ground of pure
potentiality, we put this infinite organizing power to work
for us.
