Replication problem - cannot open slapd.replog.lock

I've noticed an intermittent replication problem which seems to occur
when there are many changes applied to the Directory in a short space of
time. This message appears in the slapd log ...

could not open "/var/openldap/openldap-slurp/slapd.replog.lock"

but ...

ls -l /var/openldap/openldap-slurp/slapd.replog.lock
-rw-rw----   1 root     csrvsf          0 Sep 24 16:56
/var/openldap/openldap-slurp/slapd.replog.lock

and as far as I know it's always been there!
Anyone seen this before?
