RE: Updated LDAP Presentation (PDF)

A good explanation can be found at:

http://java.sun.com/products/jndi/tutorial/ldap/ext/index.html

Paraphrased:

The "extension" operation takes a request and returns a response; the
request/response pair is an extension. These can be defined to support
standard or proprietary functionality, in effect defining new operations.

Controls are sent along with an operation request, and modify the behavior
of the operation (for example, a "sort" control sent along with a search
operation request).

I have one question I can't seem to find a good answer to. What is the
diffrence between a control and an extended operation? They seem to really
be
almost the same thing.
