no running slapd?

Hi all,

I start the slapd as root using

> slapd

then I could perform lapdadd, ldapsearch & ldapdelete

however, when I do this:

> /etc/rc.d/init.d/ldap status
Checking for service ldap: No running slapd

I checked the netstat:

tcp 0 0 *:ldap *:* LISTEN

& the processes associated with root:

23504 ? 00:00:00 slapd
23505 ? 00:00:00 slapd
23506 ? 00:00:00 slapd

The question is why does it say no slapd running? How to I make it to run? Did
I miss out something? Please reply soon. Thanks.
