HELP.. can't add anything to database

I cannot add anything to the database. The
following is the entire contents of my slapd.conf
file:

--snip

include
/usr/local/etc/openldap/schema/core.schema
pidfile /var/run/slapd.pid
argsfile /var/run/slapd.args

# Load dynamic backend modules:
# modulepath /usr/local/libexec/openldap
# moduleload back_ldap.la
# moduleload back_ldbm.la
# moduleload back_passwd.la
# moduleload back_shell.la

#######################################################################
# ldbm database definitions
#######################################################################

database ldbm
suffix "dc=policeman, dc=com"
rootdn "cn=Manager, dc=policeman, dc=com"
rootpw secret
directory /var/run/openldap-ldbm
index objectClass eq

--snip

My domain name is policeman.com but the LDAP server
resides on mail.policeman.com which is on my local
network. Do I need to add the "dc=mail" before the
policeman.com?

Also, as you can see by the slapd.conf file, my
database dir is /var/run/openldap-ldbm. I am assuming
that the .ldif file I have to create is in this dir.
Right? If it is.. do you know why when the machine is
rebooted it erases everything in that dir?

Thank
