back-bdb status?

Hi,

I noticed that there is code for a new slapd backend back-bdb.  Can anyone
provide some information about this new addition?

e.g.
   what is its purpose, functionality, features, benefits etc
   what is its status : functionally complete, beta, only for testing?

I am experiencing some database corruption problems with back-ldbm using
Berkeley DB 3.2.9.  Any advances over this configuration would especially
interest me.
