sasl and simple auth

Hello all I was wondering in openldap 2.0.7 is it possible
to combine both authentication methods simple and sasl.

Basically the machine's that are going to be authenticating
off of ldap use either shadow or md5. I just assumed that
as long as the userpassword attr. Is entered correctly any password
will do.

Is this accuarate?
