SASL??

hi folks,


I'm just getting into the SASL component of things.
I finally managed to get openldap 2.0.7 compiled with SASL and
TLS under solaris.
But I've never used SASL before.
>From bits and pieces I see here and there 
(eg http://www.openldap.org/doc/admin/ section 5)
it seems to be Yet Another userID scheme like kerberos or NIS+.

But that's all I've gotten so far. 

Can someone point me to a page that has straightforward examples of
setting up SASL ***with/in*** OpenLDAP, please?

[It might be nice to have a very simplified "intro to SASL" in
 the online admin guide, maybe? 
   section 1.7: "What the !#$@$ is SASL?"]
