Q: storing access control information - where?

Hi!

I just read some information about access control in OpenLDAP 2.0.x in the 
FAQ.
There is one thing missing which I cannot find in the administrators guide:
where and how are the passwords for users stored?
I now understand how to write "access ..." expressions but if a user comes in
with a DN, how is the password checked and what against?
Can you help me with this question?
