slapadd "constructing" cn attribute?

i'm running into a strange problem here. given an LDIF element like:

dn: cn=JoeShmoe, o=MyOrg, c=US
cn: JoeShmoe
givenName: Joe
sn: Shmoe

that i use with slapadd to create a backend database i will always get a CN
attribute that has a space in it, like:

dn: cn=Joe Shmoe, o=MyOrg, c=US
cn: Joe Shmoe
givenName: Joe
sn: Shmoe

my question is: does slapadd disregard a CN i pass in with my LDIF and
create its own CN using givenName and sn?
