These examples, IIRC, are for OpenLDAP 1.2...

Whether or not you are using 1.2 or 2.0, start by using
the appropriate quick start guide:
        http://www.openldap.org/faq/?file=172 (1.2)
        http://www.openldap.org/doc/admin/quickstart.html (2.0)

Then extended only after you have the basic system running.

Those look like errors 2.0 would produce.

That looks like 1.2 configuration files...
