Re: ---> General question about LDAP
Please refer to my steps below to configure Outlook/Messenger as LDAP
for mail address lookup.
for both testing, run slapd -d 5 -f yourslapd.conf
for debug mode to see whether the LDAP receive a connection from your mail
I have read several complains from milis saying
that Outlook has some problem looking up the LDAP records. Not Messenger.
Go to Tools-Accounts
Click Directory Service
Add your directory server network address accordingly
Answer Yes for checking addresses using Directory
Finish, but edit using properties
Click advanced mode
give your "root base dn" at search base field.
This depend on your base dn in ldbm database. Mine for testing at that
time was "dc=commverge,dc=com". It means, I want to search sub tree
of : dc=commverge,dc=com.
Do testing by typing name in the to/cc/bcc, and
they should verify the address with LDAP server.
Netscape Messenger 4.x
Type this string to Navigator browser. Please
note that my base dn is "dc=commverge,dc=com". You need to replace
it accordingly with yours.
Hope this will help you for basic config in MUA.
Netscape will prompt you to put this ldap server
to Messenger Address server or not.
Open your Messenger
Go to Edit-Preferences
Click Mail & Newsgroup, Addressing in the
Tick on Directory Server option, and change the
combo box value to your new LDAP server (by default is to Netcenter Member
You would probably tick off the local address
book option to make sure they will look up to LDAP server.
Close the preference by pressing OK
compose a new email and type the name at to/cc/bcc,
and they should replace it with the email address (if any)
Sometimes you will receive error message saying
that error in LDAP connection. Just try again.

I read the docs about setting up LDAP and configuration. I'm interested
making it as a global address book directory service for our businesses.
But is it possible for windows user to read or use LDAP as say Outlook
contacts or personal address book or even Eudora address book?
I don't see
how Outlook client can read the LDAP, it can however imports LDIF file.
I'm trying to setup a global address book for multiple platforms, Linux,
windows user(outlook, etc).
Any idea or suggestions??
