Ok that's what I thought:

here's my slapd.conf:

database ldbm
suffix ""
rootdn "cn=Manager"
rootpw secret
sizelimit 3000
pidfile /var/run/slapd.pid

Then I did the following:
ldapadd -D "cn=Manager" -w secret -h localhost
dn: c=DE
c: de
objectclass: country

And I get the answer:
adding new entry c=DE
ldap_add: No such object

Syslog says:
Mar 8 21:30:35 rumba slapd[683]: conn=0 op=0 BIND dn="CN=MANAGER" method=128
Mar 8 21:30:35 rumba slapd[683]: conn=0 op=0 RESULT err=0 tag=97 nentries=0
Mar 8 21:30:46 rumba slapd[684]: conn=0 op=1 ADD dn="C=DE"
Mar 8 21:30:46 rumba slapd[684]: conn=0 op=1 RESULT err=32 tag=105 nentries=0
Mar 8 21:30:46 rumba slapd[674]: conn=0 op=-1 fd=7 closed errno=0
Mar 8 21:30:46 rumba slapd[685]: conn=0 op=2 UNBIND

Do I need to define anything before the first country or do I have another basic
error in understanding the concept?
