Newbie attribute question

Greetings,

I am just beginning to learn LDAP and have openldap functioning fine on one of our Linux servers.  While trying to learn what/how we can use LDAP as far as business practices, I noticed that there is no (or little) documentation as to what attributes can be used.  I know that 'cn' is the short version of 'commonname' and appears to be reminiscent of the attributes in the distinguished name of digital certificates.  

Is there a list of the long and short versions of the allowable attributes for use with LDAP?

Are there "better" examples of what can be done with LDAP?

I am sure that, as I get more familiar with it, the technical papers will make more sense.  I am looking for that beginning primer to get me going.
