I taking a guess, but look at your suffix statement.

Subject: Newbie Problems...

Hi-
I've been having problems w/ getting slapd running. It seems to run fine thn
exit normally after processing the files. I think it is because I am having
a problem creating a database. I have tried everything I can find, but for
now I'm sticking w/ a tutorial I found @
http://www.linuxworld.com/linuxworld/lw-1999-03/lw-03-uptime.html. Here is
my slapd.conf:

-------------

#
# See slapd.conf(5) for details on configuration options.
# This file should NOT be world readable.
#
include /usr/local/etc/openldap/slapd.at.conf
include /usr/local/etc/openldap/slapd.oc.conf
schemacheck	off
#referral	ldap://ldap.itd.umich.edu

pidfile /usr/local/var/slapd.pid
argsfile	/usr/local/var/slapd.args

#######################################################################
# ldbm database definitions
#######################################################################

database	ldbm
#suffix "o=root, dc=darkmane, dc=w-link, dc=com"
suffix ,o=darkmane Personal DB, c=US"
directory	/usr/tmp
#rootdn "cn=root, dc=darkmane, dc=w-link, dc=com"
rootdn "cn=darkmane, ,o=darkmane Personal DB, c=US"
rootpw uh-huhright...
# cleartext passwords, especially for the rootdn, should
# be avoid. See slapd.conf(5) for details.

-------- simplified ldif file I want to make a database

dn: o=darkmane Personal DB, c=US
o: darkmane Personal DB
objectclass: organization

dn: uid=darkmane ,o=darkmane Personal DB, c=US
uid: darkmane
cn: darkmane
objectClass: account
objectClass: posixAccount
objectClass: top
objectClass: shadowAccount
userPassword: {crypt}$1$Xun1.egN$PsWpIEn6Zg7tv/E/3HqTA/
shadowLastChange: 10830
shadowMax: 99999
shadowWarning: 7
shadowInactive: -1
shadowExpire: -1
loginShell: /bin/tcsh
uidNumber: 502
gidNumber: 503
homeDirectory: /home/sean

----------

Does anyone have any idea why I can't make all this work? I'm trying
everything as root. But I run ldif2ldbm -i <filename>, then look in the
/usr/tmp directory and there aren't any files. I am confused, and of course
new to the world of LDAP, but I learn quickly.
