Thanks a lot for your hints! Yes, there was another (older) instance of
slapd running on my system, I found that the port 389 was in use.
killall slapd shut them all down. I could verify by a reboot that there
was no automatic startup (yet :-) ) of the slapd.

After the reboot slapd started up successfully and is now listening on
port 389...
