Enterprise LDAP Implementation

I'm interested in hearing from anyone who can speak (actually, type!) to an
enterprise-wide implementation of LDAP, where the directory must be able to
have its schema expanded to handle related applications.

This means re-architecting some web-based applications, etc.  It makes
overall sense to me, but "what do I know"?  This is for a federal agency of
maybe 30,000 users, and I'd love to hear from anyone with some experience to
speak to.
