first an answer:

you need to set the search base in the advanced settings for the directory
under accounts.

now a question:

i managed to get netscape to send (and i think) fetch a certificate to (and
from) my directory. granted, i had to make the directory default to write
access, but it's a start.

i then went to play with outlook. while i can get outlook to find the
directory entry, and therefore the email address, it ignored the certificate.
in addition, there doesn't appear to be any mechanism for sending (or
retrieving) a certificate to a directory under outlook. has anyone found a
way to make this work? this is partly what i was hoping to gain from LDAP, a
means to simplify certificate dissemination.

there's mention of a outlook/openldap howto in the archives on the openldap
site. was it even completed?

thanks in advance.
