Authentication

I am attempting to set up several servers to authenticate users using
LDAP.  I will need to set up PAM and Apache to authenticate using LDAP.
While I have found a number of packages for such authentication, I am
having a lot of trouble figuring out which ones are best, and how to set
up the systems.  In particular, I do not know how to properly configure
my LDAP server and set up the user database.  I would greatly appreciate
any advice or links anyone has to offer.  Thanks.
