smart referrals with openldap 1.2

Hallo LDAP Specialists,

is it true, that smart referrals, like:
dn: ref="ldap://engineeringserver/ou=Engineering,o=SomeOrgName",\
ou=Engineering,o=SomeOrgName objectclass: referral

are not yet possible in openldap, since they are only supported in
ldapv3 ?

I have to ldap servers with two different homedn's: abc and xyz

I want the clients to search both LDAP Servers after another.

I would be very happy for any answer to my questions, and sorry for my
bad english.
