sare all compiled binaries supposed to be so huge?

when i compile the openldap package my file sizes are huge, for what
*seem* to be small programs.  for example . . .
slapd		8169720
ldif2index	6618408
ldif2ldbm	6622352
ldbmtest	6633656

is everyone else getting binaries this big?
