Outlook-like Contact Manager facility

Greetings!  I can see how to configure Outlook to use an LDAP server
for email address lookups, but is there any way to replicate the MS
Exchange function of synchronizing personal "contact" folders with a
global database via LDAP?  Outlook doesn't even seem to present these
options unless an MS Exchange server is available, as apart from an
LDAP server.  Anyone have a work around?  I could probably write it
myself if someone could provide the format of MS .ost files.
