How should alternate attribute name work

Can someone provide a pointer to how the alternate attribute
names are used in OpenLDAP. By alternate attribute name
I'm referring to the second name that can be given to attributes
definition in the slapd.at.conf files. For example:
  attribute facsimiletelephonenumber fax tel

If an entry has a value for "facsimiletelephonenumber" a query
asking to return "fax" gives nothing. Using "fax" in the
search filter also fails to find the entry.

This type of use of alternate names works with Netscape's server
so I'm wondering if I'm missing a configuration or whether this
functionality hasn't been implemented.

Thanks in advance.
