ldif2ldbm grafting onto db

Environment: RH Linux 5.2, OpenLDAP 1.2

I want to graft a piece of a database into an existing database, but
ldif2ldbm seems to overwrite the entire database. Do I have to use
ldapadd/modify to do additions to the database?  Is there some variant
of ldif2ldbm that just _adds_ to the database instead of blasting it?

Or am I mistaken that ldif2ldbm seems to completely blast my database?
