Thanks,  Khyati and Bill Hirsch for your help. I tried with your
suggestions and still got the same message. 

I suspect that the search client can't talk to the server even I run the
search client from the same box, because I received "Can't contact LDAP
server" if I did not put "o=comapny, c=US" in the search argument. 

Is there anything else I need to do when I build the database or activate
the slapd daemon??

Any other ideas??
