I don't know if you're still having trouble with this, but the following
worked for me (RH 4.2 + kernel 2.0.34).

Edit build/platforms/linux-gcc/Make-platform and uncomment the following:

# not all versions of Linux support POSIX Threads
#THREADS=-DPOSIX_THREADS -DREENTRANT
#THREADSLIB=-lpthread

Then go back to the top of the source tree, copy Makefile-common.gmake to
Makefile-common, "make veryclean," then make.

You need to have threads enabled to pass test 7.
