So - to mimic the Exchange's behavior to an Exchange client I need to
provide an LDAP server containing the central address book? But what about
the format of the entries? Using the "person" object class and "email" field
would be enough?

Well, I don't have an Exchange server. In fact I have seen one twice in my
life, but I was asked if it's possible to obtain same functionality with a
Unix (Linux) based server. I know it's possible on the e-mail forwarding and
retrieving side (using any of fine Unix MDAs and some post office type
server like qpopper) but I want to know what else I have to provide to
clients to get what they are looking for. I heard from them that
addressbooks are important and so I came across LDAP.
What I need now is to know how to format the entries in the LDAP's server
database to get the clients to behave correctly (ie. expand and browse
addresses).
BTW - none of the Microsoft "gurus" I asked (people who have been trained at
special classes and operate large Exchange servers) knew what protocols
Exchange uses. They were talking some strange language instead.
