but I still seem to have a problem, although I have not touched the
Make-common file (other than dopying Make-common.dist to Make-common)
the slapd binary gives this error, leading me to believe that it is
looking in the root dir for the conf file....:

/root/servers/dlap/servers/slapd# slapd -d 1
slapd 3.3 (Thu Sep 24 15:49:0-5 PDT 1998)
             root@mail:/root/servers/ldap/servers/slapd
could not open config file "/slapd.conf" - absolute path?
/slapd.conf: No such file or directory
