Well, I hadn't ever used the NEW_LOGGING code before. I just enabled it and
have to say its output is a bit ugly. I can see that it's potentially useful
to have fine-grained control over what subsystems are logged, but I'm not
sure it's valuable to include the subsystem name in the actual log messages.
A function name should be sufficient.

So I guess it still seems like a good idea to me, just the current
implementation needs some tweaking. And I'm tired of maintaining both as
well. Let's get rid of one or the other, definitely.
