Argh.  Sounds a lot less convenient to configure.

Also, there are many options that belong in pre-database-startup.
E.g. moduleload/path, attributetype, objectclass, pidfile, threads,
ucdata-path, readonly, replica.
And what about the 'database' sections - how do you intend to
move them into the DIT somehow?

BTW, what if someone wants to compile a slapd with no back-bdb or
back-ldbm, only back-perl or something?
