You need to configure with -fno-common.

e.g.

CFLAGS=-fno-common ./configure

Also, you can get OpenLDAP straight from Apple (project is
OpenLDAP in the Darwin repository).

ideas for troubleshooting?

I'm doing a couple of things in order to use fink installed libs (db3, openssl, libtool and dlcompat):

        	setenv CPPFLAGS "-I/sw/include"
       	setenv LDFLAGS "-flat_namespace -L/sw/lib"
	setenv CFLAGS "-fno-common"

Thanks.
