ldapsearch values starting with ":" or "<" don't print

I see that ldapsearch prints "NOT PRINTABLE" for strings starting with ":" or "<".
Same for strings starting or ending with space.

This even applies to attributes like title or description.
Is this an oversight or is there a reason?
